Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

Monday, January 19, 2015

The Worthington community is pleased to welcome Gene Smith, Vice President and Director of Athletics for The Ohio State University, as the featured speaker for the Worthington Community Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 19, 2015. The January 19th program will also include performances from Capriccio Columbus and the Capriccio Youth Choir. The program begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High Street. A light luncheon will follow the program, and the entire event is free and open to the public.

Gene Smith has been called “one of the most powerful people in collegiate sport” and was named by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the "50 Most Powerful African Americans in College Sports."  Smith’s 10 years as Athletic Director have seen tremendous success for OSU athletics as evidenced by numerous championships, improved facilities and a new focus on the total student-athlete.  His community activities include service on the boards of the Central Ohio YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Columbus, and the Bell Center for African-American males.

The 2015 Martin Luther King Community Celebration is presented by the Worthington Community Relations Commission, in partnership with the Worthington Libraries, Worthington Schools and Worthington United Methodist Church.  As a tribute to Dr. King’s commitment to help those in need, everyone attending the program is asked to bring a canned food item to be donated to the Worthington Food Pantry.
