Worthington residents will be seeing firefighters out in their neighborhood prepping fire hydrants for the freezing weather. Firefighters are opening and checking water levels in all hydrants to be sure that there is no water above the freeze line that could cause damage and breaks over the winter. If they do encounter water, they use portable pumps to pump the water out then oil the hydrant stem and caps to assure easy opening in case of emergency.
Residents should be aware that this is not the same process as when the Department flushes the hydrants in the spring. For these fall checks there will be no water discoloration in the home and no need to flush pipes or worry about doing laundry. The Department checks the hydrants each fall to be sure they are in proper shape for easy access in case of emergency during the cold winter months. Firefighters are performing checks on all hydrants throughout the City, Monday through Saturday of each week.
